Genetic Judgments

He loves jumping on Sofa, like a superman.
God knows why is she so loud?
He doesn’t help in house chores, he is always in playful mood; typically boy.
Sit properly, girls doesn’t sit like that.

All among us must have heard these sentences in our lifetime at least once either from family, friends or from social gatherings.

The most common thing in these sentences is that, we have set norms for girls and boys differently and many parents raise their children with a particular mindset.

Parents are judgmental towards the child according to their gender. Girls speak softly, and boys love to run is kind of preset notion in society. Parents also take covers for their children and correct them under these gender notions. Children who are raised with these gender notions also tend to think in a similar manner and find difficult to accept changes in future years.
AuraOfThoughts-Biased Judgment

Correct children as a person first. Lets remake above sentences while considering child’s behavior in priority.

He loves jumping on Sofa, like a superman.
He adores superman, so he keep looking for a place to stay at a height.

God knows why is she so loud? Why don’t you talk politely?
Being loud at all times shows you are rude, be kind and soft-spoken.

He doesn’t help in house chores, typically boy.
He is always in playful mood, but you also need to help in house chores.
Sit properly, girls doesn’t sit like that.
We need to sit with proper posture and in a manner that is courteous.

Just a little rephrasing of words can make a lot of difference in upbringing of child. Let our kids be raised, as a great human being first without being gender biased. Be cautious in what you speak as it may help build better mindset of kids.

  1. Thank you for visiting my blog Sonal.
Words are powerful tools, especially the ones uttered by parents, and can have long-lasting effects.
So, like you say, it's imperative we watch what we say so that we can bring up good humans.

  3. I think moms need to be given classes. treat both gender kids equally and this will lead to true woman empowerment. crime against women too will come down when we raise sensitized sons

  4. Hehehe yes I have heard these especially the don't sit like that. Sit like a girl part. I refrain from telling my daughter that and ask her to be careful of her torn pants sometimes... Or visible undergarments...

  6. Wow..I had not get a chance to read this post during A2Z challenge but glad that today I had read it. indeed in our society we have that kind of "gender judgements" and sometimes parents behave unconsciously in that manner. your corrections in phrases are so apt and for sure help in making a change in this aspect.

  7. Very well said...it is not important what you say but how you say. We say kids should learn lot of things from their elders but I think its time to learn from them.

  8. Gender equality should start at the beginning stage of a man or woman's life. As you said rephhrasing your words can be the first step because we need to undo the conditioning and restart afresh with a whole new perspective. This could be a long process but we can start this and pass on to the next generations so that this conditioning would be undone permanently at some point.

  9. The way we talk to our kids will get internalized in them. It becomes their thought process so its imperative to be concious of the way we speak to our kids

  10. Well written. It's not what we say but how we say that matters. It's always important to watch our words when speaking to the kids coz kids can easily feel hurt or demotivated. Being polite and correct with your words matter a lot.

  11. In our home girls and boys are treated well and equally. But yes society needs to change from saying everything based on one gender

  12. I totally agree with you they way you have shared these pointers, we as parents need to understand and teach kids right things which is appropriate without thinking about gender!!
