What is Green Therapy & How does Green Therapy help balance Mental Health

Humans prosper when multiple factors around them are in a balanced form and one of the factors is nature in synchronization with humans. Have you ever felt the change in your mood and behavior when you are close to nature or a serene place that is gushing with the profoundness of the environment? A smile passes through our lips, the heart is content, eyes have nature's beauty to enjoy and one feels good about everything. If you are nodding in yes then you have also experienced nature therapy.

What is Green Therapy or Eco Therapy:

Green therapy is the practice of being amidst nature for healing, it also boosts the well-being of mental health. Green therapy is called Eco or Nature therapy. This practice in the ecopsychology field was developed by Theorode Roszak. It is nature’s way of healing people in the emotional, social, and physical blocks.

Benefits of Green Therapy:

1. Stress relief:

Stress needs to be demounted from time to time therefore a holiday trip in nature-filled lands helps to bring down stress levels. The aroma of nature fills the mind with peaceful thoughts and eco therapy starts functioning.

2. Living in the moment ideology:

Nature gives us the important life lesson to live in the moment. Living in the worry of the past or future leads to anxiety and depression and nature helps us to live in the moment with its ever-varying cycle that emphasizes the present.

3. Exercise:

Exercise in the surroundings of nature has multiple benefits with the physical positive outcomes it has mental benefits too. Body entitles to change that is effective. Green yoga is one of the activities that is soaring with the number of people opting for the same.

4. Relaxation:

When mind and body are connected and are in sync then the perfect balance is maintained and the approach towards life is fruitful. Spending time under the sun also helps relax the mood as serotonin hormone is released that helps to relax the mood and make the person feel calm.

5. Peer support:

If you have an urge to do trekking, participate in nature walks or perform in nature-related sports then being part of like-minded peer groups helps to fulfill the desire to be in the lap of nature and explore these areas.

Many organizations like Tata Steel are taking up mode of green therapy and are being successful too. Studies also have statistics that prove a person heals faster in a pleasant environment than in closed walls.

So next time when you plan a trip amidst the mountains, close to a beach, or place full of nature then you are surely undergoing the ecotherapy that is making everything delightful around you. We sometimes are so engrossed in our technology-based life that a walk in a society park can also do wonders, be close to nature and feel the difference. Gardening is also one of the ways to feel the bond with ecology and it gives us a sense of responsibility towards the environment; though little but we all can contribute towards a big positive change in building the environment.

  20. Very true. More so, after being locked at home for long hours during lockdowns and now due to fear of next wave of Corona. I was procrastinating since long time. I think, I will resume my evening walk from today only.

  21. I agree completely. When I was home, my garden was my therapy. Now I don't have a garden but I walk in the lap of nature. It helps me relax a lot and I love feasting my eyes on the green thick foliage I walk through. It is the need of the hour.Very well written.
