Book Review of YA book The Itsy Bitsy Spyder by Apeksha Rao

We all want to be in a profession which gives us excitement in life and what will happen when the job itself is thrilling. Let us have a look at the detailed book review of 'The Itsy Bitsy Spyder' by Apeksha Rao.

Book Title & Cover:

The title of the book 'The Itsy Bitsy Spyder'  is on the lines of a famous nursery rhyme with a twist in word Spyder, which tells us that it is going to be a story about a spy.

The cover is very eye-catching with colorful caricatures of the lead character in the centre while all the other characters who influence the lead surround her.

About the Author:

Apeksha Rao stays in Bangalore, though her heart belongs to Mumbai. She loves to write strong female characters who break traditional gender barriers. Apart from The Spyders, which is a series about a secret sisterhood of teen spies, Apeksha is working on children’s books and also, dabbling in a bit of horror.

Spyder Plot:

Itsy Bitsy Spyder revolves around Samira Joshi who is 17 years old full of energy and enthusiasm. She is strong minded and very much clear about her future plans and does not want anyone to mess up with her dreams. She is brought up in a very different way as her parents work as undercover spies for RAW. At a very young age she got well versed with ins and outs of this field as she used to accompany her parents on their tasks.

Her grandmother who she addresses as Aaji is very supportive. Samira wants to work like her parents but her mother insists she take up medicine as her career. She even forces her to visit Dr Sen, a psychiatrist to clear out her misconception and trust issues with her daughter.

Will Samira's dream of working as an undercover agent be spoiled or will she be able to convince her mother? Will Samira turn out to be a more efficient spy? These questions are left unanswered in this book but maybe the sequel can throw some light.

The Core Insights:

·      Loved the book title as it does not reveal much about the story line.

·      The story revolves around 4 to 5 characters with crisp dialogues and easy language.

·      The book wraps up in 60 pages, about an hour read basically giving an outline idea of the upcoming sequel.

·      The various secret missions are expressed with minute details.

Missed the target:

·      The chapters could have been given a title to make it more expressive.

·      The author mentions "typical Indian parents" when the lead character was told to take up medicine against her wishes does not go well as being in a progressive country all these things are a past now.

Final Word:

It’s a short and sweet read giving insight about ups and downs of undercover agents' lives. This prequel essays a refreshing storyline with a very different concept. Will wait eagerly to read the next book of the Spyder series to know more.
